He had five brothers and one sister who have all preceded him in death. He was educated in the Oklahoma Public Schools, Riverside City College, USC, Berkley, University of Wisconsin, University of Chicago, Boeing School of Aeronautics, and the USAF Institute of Technology. He made his home in Riverside since 1960. Jim served 20 years in the USAF and retired as a Major in 1964. He served in WWII and the Korean War. He was awarded a total of eleven Battle Stars and two Arrowheads for Airborne Invasions.
He is survived by his wife Joanne, daughter Dona, son-in-law Ralph Van Hulle, daughter-in-law Beckee Cost grandchildren Derek, Michael Hermon, Shane and Megan Cost, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis Cost in 2006.
Services will be private with Inurnment at Riverside National Cemetery at a later date.
