In 1905 three men decided on a name for the community in which they dwelt and for which the land they had donated for the schoolhouse. D.C. Denmark, W.L. Hawk, and Charles Steenken got together and decided the name of the town would be Denhawken; the name includes three letters of each of the men's names. The boundaries for Denhawken area are roughly described as the area within a three and one half mile radius of the school house. Many of the early settlers were the Denmark's, Hawk's, Steenken's, Peters, Wehmeyers, Lambecks, Bohmans, Havelah's, and Stahls. The predominant origins of the residents were German.
