Isabel Wall dies at age 76; descendant of Roger Williams

Isabel Wall, 76, a descendant of Rhode Island's founder, Roger Williams, and who was regarded by many as a small yet strong voice in a family with a long political tradition, died Tuesday at Newport Hospital after a short illness. She was the wife of Ashbel T. Briggs, with whom she lived on East Shore Road in Jamestown.

Mrs. Wall was a first cousin to Sen. John Chafee, and a granddaughter of Abigail Lippitt, whose ancestors also include Henry Lippitt, governor of Rhode Island in the1870s.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Lytton W. and Mary (Hunter) Doolittle.

After completing her early education at the Gordon School in Providence, she attended St. Timothy's Boarding School in Catonsville, Md., and graduated in 1937.

Although her family had a long and distinguished history of political involvement, Mrs. Wall eschewed political activity in the 1940s and 1950s, and devoted herself to her family.

She was married to Mason Cocroft of Providence, and had two sons, M. Freeman Cocroft, presently of San Diego, Calif., and Duncan H. Cocroft of Boca Grande, Fla., and Minneapolis, Minn.

Mrs. Wall opened Chez Elise, a clothing store on College Hill, in a partnership with Elise Jackson.

Meanwhile, she had met Ashbel T. Wall, first vice president of Brooks Brothers, and whose great-great-grandfather, Henry Sands Brooks, founded Brooks Brothers in 1818.

She and Mr. Wall were married in 1961, and the newly wedded couple moved to New York, where Mrs. Wall became a volunteer at Roosevelt Hospital, and was active in Manhattan's cultural circles. She and her husband also traveled widely, and had been around world several times.

After Mr. Wall retired, the couple moved to Block Island, where they lived for three years before moving to Jamestown in 1978.

Since then, Mrs. Wall worked as a volunteer at the Newport Art Museum, and ran the gift shop there.

She was a communicant of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Narragansett Avenue.

Besides her husband and sons she leaves a brother, Duncan Doolittle of Narragansett; two sisters, Esther Doolittle Ames of Boston and Abigail Doolittle Ross of Ligonier, Pa.; five stepchildren, Anthony S. and Henry H. Briggs, both of Malvern, Pa., William A. Briggs Jr. of Newport and Mrs. Russell Flagg and Mrs. Charles P. Lee, both of New York and Narragansett; 20 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's Church. Burial will be private.
