Organized Crime Figure. As a youngster, he was in and out of reform school. As an adult, he went to adult prison for bank robbery and escaped, joining John Dillinger's mob. With them he pulled a series of bank robberies - often shooting down bank guards and bystanders for the pleasure of it (he killed three F.B.I. agents before his own demise). He met his end near Barrington, Illinois in a shootout with two Federal men, Sam Cowley and Herman Hollis, both of whom had been at the Biograph Movie Theatre when Dillinger was killed. The two agents passed Gillis, his wife Helen and John Paul Chase on the road and went after him. In the ensuing shootout both agents were killed, but not before mortally wounding "Baby Face". He died in the arms of his wife Helen later that night. The next day his naked corpse was found in a roadside ditch next to a cemetery near Niles Center.
