Born March 3, 1917 in Monroe, he was the son of Edgar and Georgianna (St. Pierre) Calkins. He married Virginia M. Leonard on June 28, 1941 in St. Mary's Church. Sadly, she preceded him on January 25, 2009.

Edgar had been employed by Monroe Auto Equipment for approximately 30 years where he worked as a millwright and foreman till 1966. He then worked at Premier Industries in Monroe for 16 years as a machinist before retiring in 1982.

Edgar was a Detroit Tigers Baseball fan and enjoyed reading and gardening. As a youth, Edgar worked with his father at his Acme Basket Factory. His early exposure to a variety of wood working projects led to a lifetime hobby. For the past 30 years, Edgar had been well known for his hand made swings and picnic tables.

In keeping with Edgar's tradition of supporting various missionaries, his family asks that memorial contributions be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul in lieu of flowers.
