The funeral service for Henry Cecil Doler, age 89, will be held Friday, December 16, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs, MS. Visitation will be on Thursday evening, December 15, at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City and on Friday at Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs from 1:00-2:00 p.m. The burial service will be at Vance Cemetery near Slate Springs. He was born February 15, 1922, in Slate Springs, MS to Jonathan Patrick and Henrietta West Doler and died on December 14, 2011. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Slate Springs where he served as a deacon for many years.
Mr. Doler served in World War II with the 313th Regiment of the 79th Infantry of the U. S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on June 14, 1944 and participated in front line combat in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until December 19, 1944 when he was seriously wounded in Germany near the Siegfried Line. In addition to the Purple Heart he received other medals including the Bronze Star which was awarded to him for risking his own life to rescue a wounded soldier. In 2004 he returned to France with his son, Jon, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day and for recognition of the 79th Infantry for the liberation of the French town of La Haye Du Puit. While there, he was thanked many times by the French people for helping to liberate their country. Although the war left much physical and emotional pain with him, he was very proud to have served the United States of America.
Survivors include: Daughter, Donna Criss (Stanley) of Calhoun City; son, Jon Doler of Leland; five grandchildren: Jody Criss (Amanda) of Huntsville, AL, Steven Criss of Bruce, Andrea Doler Clanton (Melvin) of Grenada, Scott Doler of Bellefontaine, and Jondelyn Doler Catlette (Brantley) of Cleveland; and one great-grandson, Jackson Chase Clanton of Grenada. Two other great-grandchildren are expected to arrive in 2012.
He also is survived by 2 sisters: Mrs. Blanche Allen of Eupora and Mrs. Robbie Watson of Houston. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Doler; a brother, James W. Doler; and two sisters, Mrs. Celia Ruth Mawk and Mrs. Dorothy Lacey.
