Felix F. Saenger, 82, a retired Fredericksburg businessman who was long active in the civic and athletic affairs of the community, died on Sunday, September 19, 1976, at 5:10 a.m., in the Veterans Hospital in Kerrville.
A native of Fredericksburg, he was born here on August 15, 1894, the son of Edmund Saenger and Rosina Ottmers Saenger. He married Ella Meckel on June 10, 1920, and she died Jan. 15, 1955. On June 3, 1956 he married Mrs. Estella Rusche.
Saenger was one of the founders, along with Ed. F. Ochs, 19 1921, of the Saenger & Ochs men's clothing store. The two were partners for 34 years and after the retirement of Ochs, his son, Fred Saenger became a partner and the two operated the store, located at 110 E. Main Street, where a portion of the Fredericksburg Publishing Co., now stands, until 1963.
Saenger entered the U.S. Army at the age of 26 to serve in World War I, on May 15,, 1918. He served overseas in the Meuse=Argonne offensive, which was the turning point of the war and was on the front lines when the Armistice was signed. Later he served with the U. S. Army of occupation at Coblenz, Germany.
Prior to entering into the men's clothing business he worked for Reliance Roller Mills and the Richard Henke Butcher Shop. He entered retail sales with the Burrier-Maier Store and remained with them for six years prior to joining Ochs for the opening of their firm.
One of his great loves was baseball and he served as manager of the Fredericksburg Giants baseball team from 1924 to 1939, when it was recognized as one of the leading semi-pros teams in this section of the state.
He was a member of Fredericksburg Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years, a director of the Gillespie County Fair Association for 12 years, and a director of the Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Fred, and a daughter, Dorothy, Mrs. Adolph Cornehl, both of Fredericksburg; and a step-daughter, Nora, Mrs. Walmer Langehennig, Llano.
Also surviving are the grandchildren; Alan Saenger, San Antonio; Roy Saenger, Fredericksburg; Cathleen, Mrs. Patrick Straube, Fredericksburg; and a step-grandchild, Donald Langehennig, Llano.
He was the last surviving member of his family and was preceded in death by brothers; Otto, Alfred, Hilmar, Henry, Chester and Eddie Saenger; two sisters, Alma, Mrs. Hilmar Weber; and Ella, Mrs. Hugo Baethge. Two grandchildren also preceded his in death.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept 21, at 1:45 p.m. in the Beckmann Funeral Chapel, and at 2 p.m. in Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kermit Menking officiating.
The men's choir of Zion Lutheran and the congregation sang at the rites. Mrs. Larry Henke was the organist.
Full military honors were accorded at the St. Mary's Cemetery, where interment was made.
Pallbearers at the rites were Martin Baethge, Gus Rusche, Kelton Schneider, Nelson Meckel, Joe Brake and Kermit Kothe.
