Met her first husband, F. Gurney Stubbs, when she became the head surgical nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago (he was a physician there). She was a famous suffragist, antiwar activist, and noted for "urging all women to remain unmarried or to refuse to bear children". Her father was quite noteworthy in Chicago as a newspaper reporter for the Chicago Times.

Her body was cremated at the Fresh Pond Crematory in New York City.
