Norbert L. Hammerschmidt, 87, Fargo, ND, died Monday, January 22, 2007 at MeritCare Palliative Care Hospital, Fargo.

Norbert L. Hammerschmidt was born October 29, 1919 in Hillsview, SD. He graduated from St. Francis Academy in Hankinson, ND. After graduation, he was drafted into the U. S. Army and served in the Army Infantry from 1942-1945.

After his discharge, he moved to Moorhead, MN and attended Dakota Business College, Fargo, graduating in 1947. He began work for Sherwood Lumber as a bookkeeper and eventually became the owner of the company.

Norbert and Marguerite Richard were married January 4, 1950 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with Marguerite's brother, Father A. J. Richard officiating.

He sold Sherwood Lumber in 1976 when he retired. In 1977, he began work for the Diocese of Fargo as Comptroller for 8 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of Church of the Holy Spirit, volunteered at the Fargo Emergency Food Pantry, St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Store and Church of the Holy Spirit. He was a member of the Lions, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and Elks.

For a number of years, he and Marguerite spent the winters in Mesa, AZ and summers at their home on Lake Maud.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and three sisters.

Norbert is survived by his wife, Marguerite; three sons, Thomas, Daniel and David, all Fargo; and four grandchildren.
