MEEK, Elizabeth Anne, 98, of Wheeling, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at her home where she had lived since her birth. She was born August 28, 1912 to Richard Sherman and Clara Dowler Meek.
Betty Anne was a 1930 graduate of Triadelphia High School, and earned her A.B. and Masters degrees at West Virginia University. At WVU, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and Mortar Board, International Honorary, and was president of the Pan Hellenic Association. During her 36-yr career in education, she taught English at Warwood High School and Triadelphia High School, and is remembered as a challenging teacher. From 1955 to 1957 , she was on leave to serve in Charleston as president of the West Virginia Classroom Teachers Association. In the 1960's, she was president of the West Virginia Education Association; Platform and Resolution's Committee; and chair of the Platform and Resolutions Committee of the National Education Association. Listed in the Who's Who of American Women, Betty Anne received NEA's award for "Distinguished Service to Education" and was selected as a"Leader in Secondary Education".
After retiring from teaching, Betty Anne plunged into volunteer work with Wheeling charities and organizations. She received Volunteer of the Year awards from Easter Seals, AARP, and the Ohio County Association of Retired School Employees. The YWCA of Wheeling honored her at its 1998 "Tribute to Women" dinner. She volunteered for 25 years at the Ohio County Public Library, the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center, and the Salvation Army. She served as president of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, Collegiate Alumnae of Wheeling, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Betty Anne was also an active member of the Evergreen Twig of OVMC, Woman's Club of Wheeling, King's Daughters, Church Women United, and YWCA. She was a lifelong member of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women.
Betty Anne's family often referred to her as a "professional" West Virginia, because she was such an ardent supporter of her city and beautiful state. She even requested that "The West Virginia Hills" be sung at her service.
In addition to her parents, a sister, Hester Meek Veith, with whom she traveled extensively, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her nephew, Richard L. Veith and his wife, Carolyn of Devon, PA; a grand niece, Barbara W. Veith of Brooklyn, NY; and a grand nephew, C. Douglas Veith of Los Angeles, CA.
Interment at Greenwood Memorial Cemetery was private, with the Rev. Dr. Charles D. LaPlaca of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church officiating. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
