Viola M. Hampton, 78, formerly of Andrews Place, passed away Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at the Carolyn Croxton Slane Hospice Residence, Harrisburg.

Vi retired from the Williamsport Hospital as a switchboard operator and a medical records clerk after more than 30 years. She was a former member of the All Saints Episcopal Church where she served on the Vestry and the Altar Guild.

Vi volunteered for the West End Campaign for Swimming Pools, was the Judge of Elections for 30 years in the 9th ward, president and secretary for the Williamsport Home Apartment Council and president of the Independent Resident Assembly of the Williamsport Home for three years. She enjoyed playing bridge, set back, bowling, crafts, traveling with her friend Miriam Johns, spending time with her family and was always willing to lend a hand to help others whenever needed.

Born Nov. 7, 1931, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of Frank and Margaret Nevill Stoviak.

Surviving are a son, Mark (Denise) Hampton of Philadelphia; daughters, Kim (Ray) Haines of Jersey Shore, Dawn (Denny) Gallagher of Middletown, Lisa (CJ) Foer of Mechanicsburg and Jill (David Spigelmyer) Hampton Boyd of Dauphin; sisters, Lucille (John) Dudek and Harriet (Robert Karicher) Kitchen, both of Williamsport, and Donna (Sam) Shaffer of Richboro; 12 grandchildren and three and 1/2 great-grandchildren.

Vi was predeceased by her husband, James R. Hampton and a brother, Thomas Stoviak.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Knight-Confer's, 1914 Memorial Ave., with Chaplain David K. Fishel officiating. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Susquehanna Hospice, 1001 Grampian Blvd, Williamsport, PA 17701.
