Wilbur started his career as an electrician. He worked as a civilian aircraft mechanic in the early 1940's at Hickham Field, Hawaii and returned to the mainland just before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After that, he was employed for the war effort at the Cyclotron in Berkeley, California. After the war he worked as a television and radio repair man and general electrician. His final employment was as head electrician for a large food canning corporation.

Wilbur died of a stroke in Walnut Creek, California.
