Harold was born May 25, 1918, in Missouri Valley, Iowa, to Hans and Lea Christensen Johnson. Following graduation from Missouri Valley High School in 1936, he was employed by Lockheed Aircraft in Oregon and California until entering the U.S. Army in 1944 where he served with the 104th Infantry in Europe. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he was employed by a branch of the American Optical Company in Norfolk and retired as manager there in 1982.
Harold was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman, was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, past president of Norfolk Toastmasters, more than 50-year member of the American Legion, longtime member and past president of Norfolk Country Club and former member of the Norfolk Volunteer Fire Department.
He married Betty Anderson of Pierce on May 8, 1947. They recently observed their 59th wedding anniversary.
Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. James (Penna) Steele and husband of Pleasanton, Calif., and Mrs. Gerald (Colleen) Werner and husband of Norfolk; two grandsons, Jason Dodds and his wife, Carolyn, of California and Coby Werner and his wife, Jill, of Omaha; four great-grandchildren, and one brother, Robert, and his wife, Janice, of Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Harold became a resident of the special needs unit of the Norfolk Veterans Home in April 2002.
