In Memoriam St. John's Messenger February 1911 - St. John's Evangelical Church Louisville, Ky.

Another sudden death was that of Charles Christian Caspar MERHOFF on January 13. Some cows of his brother's dairy farm had gone astray and he went out to seek them. His people believed that he had returned and retired for the night and only the next morning became alarmed when they found his bed untouched. A search was instituted with the result that his dead body was found in a neighboring farm yard, where it had evidently lain all night. It is supposed, that he felt one of the heart attacks to which he was subject coming, and that he sought to reach the nearest house. He fell before he reached it and his presence was not noticed by the tenants. The deceased was a son of the late Henry Christian Merhoff and his first wife, Caroline, nee Wiese. He was born December 1, 1848, was baptized by the Rev. August Bargas and confirmed by the Rev. Th. Dresel, in whose house he boarded during the months of the instruction. He was unmarried and made his home with his two brothers, John and Henry Merhoff on the Ashbottom Road. There the funeral was held January 16, followed by interment in Cave Hill. His mother, Mrs. Mary Herhoff; five brothers, Christian, Henry, John, Fred and Frank Merhoff, as well as three sisters, Mrs. Adam Weber, Mrs. Sarah Ziegler and Mrs. George Korfhage, survive him.
