Military Figure. Kobayashi was one of the most highly skilled combat pilots in the Imperial Navy and commander of the shipboard bomber unit of the carrier "Hiryu" during the Battle of Midway. He was killed while leading the dive bombing attack on USS "Yorktown," an attack that temporarily put the U.S. carrier out of action. His physical remains were lost at sea, but his spirit has been enshrined at Yasukuni. He was portrayed by actor Bennett Ohta in the movie "Midway" (1976).
