Judson W. Van DeVenter was born on a farm near Dundee, Michigan. He attended Hillsdale College and studied art, then became interested in music. He taught school at the Rankin School in Dundee in 1878. He became famous for writing hymns, his most well known is probably "I Surrender All" which is found in many Methodist hymn books today. He was associated with a Christian school in Florida. Billy Graham remarked that Judson Van DeVenter was an inspiration to him. Judson Van DeVenter is mentioned in a book about Dundee local history, published by Arcadia, on page 94. He is buried at Maple Grove Cemetery at Dundee.

Judson Van Deventer married Malissa Miller, born OH, daughter of Josiah Miller and Ivy. Children: Ivy Cleo Van Deventer, born 1881, died 1902; Paul Dore, born 4 Oct 1888, photographer in Tampa, FL, married 28 Sep 1910 to Frances Irene Junkin and their son was named Judson, born 11 Feb 1913.
