About 1840, Margaretha along with her parents and siblings immigrated to Canada West.
On 21 October 1850, Margaretha (age 21) married George Fischer, (age 22) son of Mathias Fischer and Margaretha Schmidt, at St. Clements, Waterloo County, Canada West. One known child was born to them in Wellesley Township:
• Peter, born 4 September 1851. Married Theresia Hager.
Around 1851 some of the pioneers began leaving Waterloo County. As Rev. J. A. Lenhard wrote in the book German Catholics in Ontario: "The exodus from Waterloo County was caused by the prospect of cheap land in Bruce County and this attraction was called the Saugeen fever. All this northern district was commonly called Saugeen. These German Catholics from Waterloo County were accustomed to pioneer life and made good settlers…Pioneer life was hard; the trees had to be felled and burned to make a clearing for crops; roads were but a trail through the forest…" George and Margaretha were apparently part of the "Saugeen fever" and bought 223 acres in Concession 15 Lot 30 in Carlsruhe, Bruce County, Canada West on 14 November 1854. Five more children were born to Margaretha and George in Carlsruhe:
• Mary Cunigunda, born 19 December 1855. Married John B. Stevens.
• Adam, born 28 October 1856. No known marriage.
• Anna Maria Eva, born 28 October 1856. Never married.
• Regina Catherine, born 7 September 1858. Died young.
• George, born 16 May 1860. Married Mary Theresia Nesslein.
On 14 March 1861, the Fischers sold their land in Carlsruhe to Jacob Polfuss and moved back to Wellesley Township in Waterloo County. George and Margaretha apparently lived in Wellesley Township at least through 1867. George is listed in the Waterloo County Directory and Gazetteer in both 1864 and 1867 as living on Concession 9, Lot 6h in Wellesley Township. Three more children were born in Wellesley Township:
• Marion Joseph, born 27 October 1862. Married 1st Elizabeth Eggers; 2nd Alice Pearce.
• Elizabeth, born 13 June 1864. Married Joseph Henry Coller.
• John R, born 2 October 1866. Married Mary Bernadine Spieker.
In 1871, George and Margaretha and their children immigrated to Todd County, Minnesota. They settled on a farm in Long Prairie Township, about 5 miles east of Long Prairie Village. One child was born in Long Prairie Township:
• Michael, born 3 October 1872. Died at age 15.
On 28 June 1906, Margaretha (age 77) died at her home in Long Prairie Township. (Her place of death is given as Bruce in her obituary but all censuses indicate the family lived in Long Prairie Township.) Her obituary reads: "Mrs. Fischer passed away last Thursday afternoon about two o'clock with dropsy, at her home in the town of Bruce, at an advanced age. The funeral was held Saturday morning at nine o'clock from the Catholic church, and the remains interred in the local cemetery. Mrs. Fischer had been in poor health for a long time, being a sufferer from dropsy and for several weeks before her death there were but little hopes entertained for her recovery on account of her advanced age. Deceased was born in Bavaria [Bindersbach], Germany and when a young woman moved to Canada, where she lived until she came to Todd County. She and her husband moved to the county after 35 years ago and have resided in the town of Bruce. Deceased leaves an aged husband and seven children, four [five] sons and three daughters, to mourn her death. The sons are Peter, a well-known farmer of Hartford Township, and John, Geo. and Tony [There was no son named Tony but did have sons named Adam and Joseph]. John has been located for the past few years in Western Canada. The family have the sympathy of the entire county in their great loss." (Argus Newspaper, 5 July 1906)
On 30 June 1906, Margaretha was buried at St. Mary Cemetery in the same plot as her son, Michael, who had died in 1888.
