Obituary

William (Bill) Francis Carroll, 85, of Poolesville, MD, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 8, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. He was married to Joan Titus Carroll for nearly 55 years.

Born in the Bronx, New York, on September 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Francis Anthony Carroll and Nora Madeline Casey. He was preceded in death by his sister, Irene Roinick, step-sister Frances Baker, and niece Gena Proulx.

At age 16, Bill joined the Merchant Marines and then in 1948 he joined the U.S. Navy. His four years of service found him on the USS Salem working as a machinist's mate. He served in the Korean Conflict. Bill worked for the railroad in Pennsylvania and New Jersey before joining Stone & Webster as a land surveyor. It was this job that brought him to Poolesville where he met his future bride, Joan.

Bill and Joan were married on November 20, 1960. They moved several times, living in Virginia and Florida for Bill's career, before returning to Poolesville to raise their young family. Bill joined Kidde Consultants in 1969, working as a land surveyor, and retired as a senior associate in 1991. Bill stayed active during retirement, working 20 years at Professional Cleaners, making him a prominent face in the Poolesville community. He also performed local field work duties for the Census Bureau and worked in an official capacity during local and national elections.

Bill was a member of the Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church and participated in a variety of church-related activities. He also volunteered with WUMCO Help, where he picked up and delivered donations. Several mornings a week, Bill could be found with his McDonald's buddies enjoying a cup of hot coffee and discussions ranging from politics to aging to local gossip. Bill's hobbies included golf, reading, travel, gardening, cooking and enjoying a delicious variety of food, and music. Joan considered Bill to be a "Renaissance Man" because of his intellectual knowledge, appreciation of art, extensive travel, and love of literature. Above all else, Bill enjoyed visiting and traveling with family members, including all 50 states and six of the seven continents.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Colleen (Mike) Campbell of Dutton, MT, Melanie (Nick) Psaltakis, of Poolesville, Billy (Emma) Carroll, of Virginia Beach, VA; seven grandchildren, Jessie Campbell, Jake (Kendra) Campbell, Peter, Jordan and Matthew Psaltakis, Tomas (Amanda Spence) Carroll and Cody Carroll; and 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving are a nephew, Gene Roinick of California, and three step-sisters residing in New York. He will be fondly remembered by family and many friends for his warm smile and sense of humor.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Rd. (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD (hiltonfh.com). Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 13, at 11:00 at Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Rd, Poolesville, MD. Interment will follow in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, PO Box 358, Poolesville, MD 20837.
