Author. He was an Irish political activist of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, Social Democrat Federation and a Trade Unionist. In 1890 he became a member of the Independent Labor Party. At various times, he wrote articles for newspapers as well as lyrics to songs. He is credited with writing the international labor anthem "The Red Flag" in 1889. The lyrics have been translated from English to several other languages. Connell was awarded the Red Star Medal in 1922 by Russian leader, Vladimir Lenin. A memorial was erected in honor of him at Crossakiel in 1989.
