Shelby Montgomery Cooper, aged 87 years and 5 months died at his home on lower Beaver Creek last Friday of senility, after an illness of about six weeks.
Deceased was born near where he died, on February 12th, 1819, he was a son of Henry and Pacience Back Cooper, on March 25th, 1842 he was married to Miss Eliza Beck, a daughter of the late Preston Beck, from which union eleven children were born, eight of whom are still living, being Mrs. E. P. Eades, relict of the late Jacob H. Eades of Mt. Zion, who since the death of her husband has been living with her father; Mrs Harriett R. Thurston, of Watauga; Mrs. Martha J.
Bertram, of Savage, Clinton county; Mrs. Bell Conn, of Bart; Messrs P.B., J.L. and A.I Cooper, of Gar; and J.L. Cooper, of Lula; he is also survived by two brothers Rev. William A. and Jacob L. aged 94 and 83 respectively.
In 1857 he identified himself with the Baptist Church of Beaver creek, and was a man of excellent qualities; was kind and generous and will be greatly missed in the community in which he resided.
The funeral services were conducted by his brother the Rev. William A. Cooper, after which his remains were laid to rest at the family burying ground.
