On April 16, 1970, the bodies of two female West Virginia University students were found. The students, Mared Ellen Malarik of Kinnelon NJ and Karen Lynn Ferrell of Quinwood WV, had been missing since mid-January. The two had left a movie in Morgantown WV and were hitchhiking back to their dormitory. They were last seen getting into a car with a male driver.

In their book "The WVU Coed Murders: Who Killed Mared and Karen?," authors Geoffrey C. Fuller and S. James McLaughlin indicate that Bess and Richard Ferrell were Karen's adoptive parents. The book also indicates that her biological parents were Mario and Roberta Trujillo. Karen seems to have known that she was adopted and that the Trujillos were her biological parents. She was very close with their son (her biological brother) Tyrone.
