LONG, DELPHINE FINK Delphine Fink Long, age 91, died at San Diego Hospice Care Center at Glenbrook Skilled Nursing, in Encinitas, California on Sunday, September 18, 2011. Delphine, known to everyone as Del or Honey, was born in Buffalo, New York, on September 26, 1919, to Freada and Henry Fink. She had two brothers, Elwood and Willard, and one sister,
Dorothy Fink Hall (all deceased). She spent her childhood years in Buffalo, moving to San Diego in July of 1935. Her family moved here as part of a core group with Reuben H Fleet, who started Consolidated Aircraft. At one time, during the war years, the Fink Family was one of the largest single families working at the same time at Consolidated. Our Mom graduated
from San Diego High School in January of 1937 and also graduated from Kelsey Jenny Business School in 1939. Her early work experience was with San Diego Office Supply, Consolidated Aircraft, Douglas Aircraft (in Long Beach), Rasco Department Store in Linda Vista, Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Hillcrest, San Diego City Schools and San Diego Mesa College, where she worked as a Secretary of Veterans Affairs from 1965 until she retired in 1981. She was proud of the fact that she had an Honorary Life Membership in the PTA and had been President of the PTA at Chesterton Elementary School, where her children went to school. She was also a past member of the Gamma Chi Sorority and the Alpha Iota International Honorary Sorority affiliated with Kelsey Jenny Business Office. She was a past president of San Diego Mesa College Classified Association. Mom had two great hobbies, ceramics and card making, and she poured her life into both after she retired. While living in Linda Vista, our Dad built her "ceramic crafting room" where many hours were spent with her sister, sister-in-law, brother and other family members, pouring and painting ceramics. Once Mom and Dad moved to the La Cresta at Colinas de Oro neighborhood in Carlsbad, he built her "card making craft room". Many family members, friends and neighbors were recipients of the results of both of these hobbies. Mom is survived by her daughter, Tamara, with husband Dan Cocco of Cardiff, and her son, Robert Long, with wife Sue, of San Diego. Her oldest son, Kenneth Long, and her husband of 60 years, Marion Nelson (Bud) Long, preceded her in death. She leaves five grandchildren, Dan Cocco, Jr., Robert Cocco and his wife Monique, Tracy Cocco Hill and her husband Jesse, Kelly Long Unruh and her husband Sasha, Andrew Long, who will marry Megan Walker in November, as well as five great grandchildren, Jason Martinez, Haley Cocco, Jim and Sam Hill, and Maddie Unruh, who all called her Grandma Honey. Aunt Honey leaves countless nieces and nephews. She was not only a wonderful mom to my brother and me but she was grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt as well as great-great-aunt. She completed our family and no one will ever replace her. She considered all her neighbors and friends an important part of her life. She has enriched us all. We will all miss her great smile, her sense of humor and her delight in pleasing each of us. Service and interment will be held at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, California, on Tuesday, October 4, at 10:30 a.m. She will be interred with her husband, Bud. A celebration of her life will follow the service at her daughter's home in Cardiff. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Delphine Fink Long to San Diego Hospice at 4311 3rd Avenue, San Diego, California 92103 or call (619) 278-6587. Arrangements are under the care and direction of El Camino Mortuary, Encinitas, California.
