"Kitty" was born and raised in Greenwood, Virginia, on a family farm known as "Fairview". She was the daughter of the late James Armistead Shirley and Katherine Gray Shirley.
She was a life long member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood where she devoted over 20 years to arranging flowers for the church. She had a great love for gardening and she enjoyed playing games with her nieces, nephews and cousins in their youth. "Kitty" retired from Acme, where she worked in the art department in Crozet, and then later in Louisa. She devoted much of her life to caring for her mother.
"Kitty" is survived by her brother, Shannon Shirley of Charlottesville; a sister, Theodosia Clark of California; and Martha Bates of Arizona. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Armistead Shirley Jr. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to her friend and caregiver, Danny Tomlin of Waynesboro, for his love and devotion to "Kitty" for over 30 years.
A funeral service was held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2007, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Emmanuel Episcopal Bread Fund at P.O. Box 38, Greenwood, VA 22943.
