David Elbert Sills, 66, died January 2, 2011 in the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. Funeral services are Wednesday, January 5, at 11 a.m. in the Lea and Simmons Funeral Home with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mr. Sills was a graduate of Memphis State University. Upon graduation he was commissioned into the United States Air Force as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served in both Active Duty and the Reserves, during which time he achieved the rank of Major. In later years, he used his journalism degree and wrote for various West Tennessee newspapers, where he especially enjoyed covering sporting events and human interest stories. He was preceded in death by his father, Elbert Pershing Sills.
Survivors include: his mother, Zora Nell Smith Sills of Brownsville; one son, John David Sills of Smyrna; one sister, Dorothy Sills (Dan) Jackson of Brownsville; and two nieces, Ashley Jackson Simmons of Brownsville and Laura Jackson of Richardson, Texas.
Visitation is Tuesday 5-7 p.m. in the Lea and Simmons Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to Disabled American Veterans Headquarters, 3680 South Mendenhall Dr., Memphis, TN 38115.
