Called Perry by his family, he was the son of James and Ann Wills Dale, and twin brother of Virginia Dale Gipson.

Perry married Ellen Myers 14 October 1849 in Boone Co., and they had six children: Wesley (1851), James (1852), Marilda (1854), Anna (1856), Sarah (1862), and Dessie (1871).

James Dale, a pioneer of Lebanon, died at his home, 428 Clark Street, Friday morning at 4 o'clock, after an illness of six months with heart trouble. Mr. Dale was a native of Mt. Sterling, Nicholas County, Kentucky. He was aged 76 years, 9 months, and 11 days. He was married in this county to Ellen E. Myers. He is survived by the following children: Wesley L., James H., Matilda [Marilda] J. Dickerson, Anna Woolen, Sarah, and Dessie Dale. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters: George W. Dale of Franklin,; Mrs. Verga [Virginia] Gypson, of Kansas City, Mo. Mr. Dale was a member of the Methodist Chutrch at Bethel. Funeral services were held Sunday at Milledgeville at 1 p.m. Interment Old Union.
