Captain Thomas Wilder of Leominster commanded a foot company that marched on the late alarm for the relief of Fort William Henry, as far as Springfield. There was a concern that the enemy, the French General Montcalm, after his victory at Fort William Henry, would make a bold push for Albany. But he retreated instead to Canada and the troops were recalled at Springfield. Annals of Lancaster, p60-61
