The second of seven children, Gladys was born and raised in eastern Kentucky. Coming from a family who lived off the land, the depression era probably didn't affect them much, however, that just meant their life wasn't easy to begin with. She was the only child to remain in the area her whole life. She married and raised three children within just a few miles of where she was born and raised.
