B. K. Farnsworth Dies In Salt Lake
SALT LAKE CITY, — The Utah chairman of the Crusade for Freedom, 57-year old Birney K. Farnsworth, died suddenly Thursday night in Salt Lake City.
Farnsworth suffered a stroke while performing genealogical work in the Salt Lake temple of the Latter-day Saints church and died three hours later in a hospital.
A native of Manti, Utah, Farnsworth was a graduate of the University of Utah. He taught school at Morgan for 12 years, after serving in World War I, then went into the coal business. At the time of his death, he was general manager of the Citizens Coal Company and the Castle Gate Coal Company.
For several years, in a relentless campaign against communism, he had been head of the Americanism Commission of the Utah Department of the American Legion. He was a past commander of the Legion's Salt Lake City post.
He had served two terms as state chairman of the Crusade for Freedom. In the last campaign, Utah topped the nation in exceeding percentage quotas of contributions for the campaign.
He had also served as Utah administrative assistant of the War Manpower Commission and as Utah compliance director for the Solid Fuels Administration.
Farnsworth is survived by his widow, the former Ruby Jensen of Manti, three children and two grandchildren.
