Charlie was kicked behind the ear by a horse the second or third week of February. The injury damaged the mastoid bone, and caused mastoiditis. The resultant infection progressed into a brain abscess. He was transported by train to Roanoke, Virginia and admitted to Lewis Gale Hospital on February 27th. Surgery was soon performed, but it failed to save his life. He died on March 6th at 1:30 AM. He was a popular, vibrant young man and was betrothed to Lelia Ager.
