Caleb Martin Ballard was born at Gilkey's Run in southern Nelson County. He moved to Holy Cross, in Marion County, as a young man. He was the largest landowner in the Holy Cross community. His landholdings included farms in Marion, Nelson, and Washington counties, Kentucky. His old home still stands at 3385 North St. Francis Road, Holy Cross; the house is just behind Holy Cross Cemetery.

Caleb M. Ballard left his house and vast farm lands to his only child, Cleophas F. Ballard.

The Caleb M. Ballard home place, at 3385 North St. Francis Road, was the site of the the first Trappist Monastery built in America. The Cistercian Order built an Abbey on the property in September 1805; however, the monks left in 1809 after a year long siege of flooding.
