Oren had an adventurous spirit and 'itchy feet, always looking for the greener pasture on the other side of the fence' which deterred him from staying in any place for any length of time.
In early September 1868, he and his cousin Linwood Sumner Gowen, trekked west.
In April 1870 Oren bought his farm in Grant Township, O'Brien County, Iowa.
At that time he encouraged his recently widowed mother and sisters to to come west.
For the next ten years, he traveled around exploring new territories.
After his marriage in 1880, he and Stella primarily made their home in various towns
in Iowa, although Oren was frequently away working in other towns as the pay was better.
In 1903 the family migrated to the Yorkton area of Saskatchewan in Canada where Oren settled in the village of Elfros, where the family is recorded on the 1906 and 1911 census in Elfros village.
There he remained for the rest of his life, making several trips back to the U. S. buying horses and cattle to bring back to Canada, and visiting relatives.
He and his sons bought a section of land, each owning one quarter of it.
Thus, the family remained close.
Oren enjoyed playing poker and with his sons, made frequent trips to Regina, staying for several days.
His last years were in the household of his son, Russell, at Elfros.
