Richard "Dick" Cassavoy, age 82 years, a native of Swanton and a 48 year resident of Essex Junction died late Wednesday evening December 7, 2011, at the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.

Born in Swanton on February 19, 1929, he was the son of the late Howard "Buster" and Harriett (Hatch) Cassavoy.

He graduated in 1948 from Swanton High School and continued his education at art school in Boston, MA.

On September 9, 1950, he was married to the former Theresa Lasnier who survives him.

In 1957 Dick became one of the first to be hired by the IBM Corporation of Essex Junction and after 31 years retired as manager of Machinery Repair and the Tool and Die Makers. Prior to joining IBM Dick worked for the Central Vermont Railway where he apprenticed as a machinist. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

Dick will be remembered for his great artistic ability, first in leather and continuing as a master wood carver. He was well known throughout the area for his meticulous and beautifully carved animals especially birds of all kinds. He was a member of the Green Mountain Wood Carvers. As an avid sportsman he enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. In earlier years he coached and served as president of the Swanton Little League.

In addition to his wife Theresa of 61 years, Dick leaves his son Alan and his wife Lynn of St. Albans; granddaughters, Erin Cassavoy of Albany, NY and Amy Cassavoy and fiancé Christopher Ferland of Winooski; his sister, Joyce Hamel of Binghamton, NY and nieces, Ruth and Laura Hamel.

In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Garvin, nephews, John Hamel and Rodney Newcity and a niece, Carol Dunham.

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday December 14, 2011, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Charles H. Ranges, SSE will officiate. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Cassavoy family lot in Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m.
