When Mathias Matt and his wife Elizabeth immigrated to America in 1852, his younger brother, Franz Josef "Joseph" Matt, who was about twenty years old, also came with him. Eventually Joseph was married and he settled in the Volga Twp near Elkport, thus becoming known as "the water Matt" to distinguish him from his older brother, Mathias, who was called, "the prairie Matt."

About twelve years later in 1864/65, a first cousin of Mathias and Joseph immigrated to America; Andreas Matt and his second wife, Josephine (Lampert) Matt, settled on a farm in Jefferson Twp near Guttenberg, where they raised their blended family of fourteen children.

OBITUARY
DIED--at his home in Farmersburg township on Thursday, January 9th, Mathias Mott [sic/Matt] after a long and painful illness. Mr. Mott [sic/Matt] was a native of Germany, having been born in the province of Lichtenstein, July 11, 1823. He emigrated to this country in 1852, and settled in Jefferson township, where he was married in 1854. He lived in Jefferson township nine years, and then purchased a farm in Farmersburg township where he lived until the time of his death. His wife preceded him in death some ten years ago.

Mr. Mott [sic/Matt] was a man of sterling integrity and fine business qualifications. He amassed a large amount of property which he left for his children to enjoy. He took the greatest pride in the prosperity of his children for whom he constantly labored. It was his will to see his youngest daughter united in wedlock before his death, hence her marriage took place only a few hours before he closed his eyes forever to this world.

His funeral took place on Saturday. The remains were followed by a large number concourse of sorrowing friends. Rev. Kurtz preformed [sic/performed] the last sad rites and preached the funeral sermon in the Catholic church. He was buried at the new cemetery by the side of his wife. May he rest in peace.
