Addison Mitchell McConnell, father of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, has died after a three-year bout with cancer. He was 72.
The elder McConnell died Friday at the United Medical Center in Shelbyville.
Mr. McConnell, an Athens, Alabama native, attended Wake Forest and Auburn Universities. He was a volunteer employee for the Army during World War II and later went to work as an employee-relations superintendent for E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in Louisville. He retired from that position in 1979. Mr. McConnell was chairman of the Republican Party in Shelby County and a volunteer for Boy Scouts of American and the American Red Cross.
Besides his son, he leaves his wife, Julia S. McConnell; a sister, Ethel Herring of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
