Continental Congressman, US Senator. He served as a Senator from New Jersey to the United States Senate from 1793 to 1796. During the Revolutionary War he served in the New Jersey Militia as a captain of artillery. After his time in the militia he was elected as a Delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress, serving in 1779. In 1790 he was commissioned as a Brigadier General in the United States Army by President George Washington to serve in the on-going campaign against frontier Indians known as the 1785 to 1795 Northwest Indian War. In 1794 he served as a Major General of New Jersey Militia during the Whiskey Rebellion.
