She was raised in the Vale area of South Dakota. Hazel graduated from Vale High School in 1946. Upon completion of her teachers' certificate from Black Hills Normative, she taught in rural South Dakota.
Hazel married Dale Edlund on July 6, 1952, in Casper, WY. They had five children, and lived in the five-state area before settling in Gillette in 1968. Hazel worked at several jobs, as well as managed to be actively involved with her children in baseball and 4-H. The couple later divorced. Hazel married James (Pete) Joslyn on August 12, 1975 in Rapid City, SD. They added four more children with their union. The couple lived in Lander and Buffalo, but returned to Gillette after Pete had a stroke. Hazel was an avid Cubs fan. She enjoyed square dancing, putting together puzzles, and making quilts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her greatest love was cooking and everyone who came to her house went for the cookie jar first.
