Eugene F. "Gene" Jannuzi, 96, of Patterson Heights, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 in Franciscan Manor following a brief illness.

Born Nov. 9, 1915 in Beaver Falls, he was the son of the late Raphael and Teresa Silvester Jannuzi. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Beaver Falls where he had served as an Elder and past president of the board of trustees. He was a graduate of Geneva College and he had received the "Life G" award from Geneva College in 1985; this is the highest alumni award given by Geneva College. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and had done graduate studies at Harvard Business School. He also received the "Others" service award for his longtime service to the Salvation Army, having been an active board member for many years. He was also one of the founding directors of Medic Rescue. He was a life member of the Beaver Falls American Legion, Post 261 and a longtime member of the Beaver Falls Rotary Club, and the Pittsburgh Press Club.

He had been a teacher in the Beaver Falls Junior School for six years until Pearl Harbor and the outbreak of World War II when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served overseas for 31/2 years in the U.S. Navy with the amphibious forces, first as Commanding Officer of an LCI (L), which was an infantry landing ship, and later as Commander of a Division of LCI (L)'s. At war's end he held the rank of Lieutenant. He participated in the North African Campaign, and in the assault waves of amphibious landings Sicily, and later in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and southern France. For his part in the Salerno invasion of Sicily he received a commendation from Admiral H.K. Hewitt, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces, Northwest African Waters. Admiral Hewitt commended him for his courage, perseverance, and outstanding devotion of duty.

He published a fictional book based on facts pertaining to World War II entitled Bright Star. He also had numerous articles and editorials published in the Post-Gazette after his retirement.

After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1945, he became a reporter for the Post-Gazette for six years until he became employed in 1951 by J & L Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh in their Public Relations and Advertising departments. In 1966 he joined Moltrup Steel Products Company in Beaver Falls where he was chairman of the board of directors and president until his retirement in 1989.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Moltrup Jannuzi in 2003, four brothers, Frank, Ralph, Joseph, and Edward Jannuzi, and five sisters, Leda Campbell, Clara Mae Jannuzi, Eleanor Blatter, Anita Burger, Clo Smith, and Elaine Moyer.

He is survived by his 105 year old sister, Laura Wilson, Falmouth, MA, several nieces and nephews, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Entombment in the Beaver Cemetery Mausoleum.
