John Spitler I was born in Berkeley County, Va., now part of West Virginia, February 9, 1785. He was the son of Jacob Spittler, Sr and Susannah Buckwalter Lane and was reared as a farmer. He came to Ohio in 1805, in company with his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Buntraeger, riding horseback more than 500 miles from the family farm in Botetourt, VA where his parents had their farm on Looney Creek. Late in the same year Mr. Spitler settled in Clay township, Montgomery county, on the present site of Brookville

He met Barbara Rohrer in Brookville while helping to clear land for Daniel Cripe. They were married on August 8, 1807 in Brookville by Elder Jacob Miller who was the first Dunker minister in their area. Their marriage was the first held in Clay township. They had a family of eleven children: Mary Magdalena, Jacob, Joseph , John II, Susannah, Andrew, Samuel, Elizabeth, Hannah, Barbara and Solomon.
