BRIDGEWATER

Martha Charlotte Graham Garner, after 62 years of devoted marriage to M. Elton Garner, departed this life Friday, November 17, 2006, surrounded by her family.

She was born June 8, 1923, to Charles Polk and Olive Delp Graham in Cedar Springs, Smyth County. After attending Bridgewater College and James Madison University, she worked at the Pentagon when it first opened during World War II.

She married Elton Garner on June 11, 1944, and after the war lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Barberton, Ohio, Vestal, New York and Fairfax, Virginia. She was active in the Fairfax Methodist Church and helped found the Saint George's Methodist Church, both in Fairfax. Also, in Fairfax, she was secretary to Tilman "Til" Hazel Jr., a prominent Northern Virginia attorney and developer, and later office manager for Hazel, Beckhorn and Haynes. Most recently she lived in the Bridgewater Retirement Community and belonged to the Bridgewater United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by her children, Charles Garner of Waynesboro, Keith Garner of El Cerito, California and Gail Garner of Fort Valley; and three grandchildren, Graham, Ashley and Nicole Garner. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Gentry and her husband, Sam, of Elkton; her brothers, Charles Hale Graham and his wife, Shirley, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, George L. Graham and his wife, Doris, of Arlington and Bridgewater, and Henry B. Graham and his wife, Dorice, of Bridgewater; her sister-in-law, Mary Graham of Bridgewater; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Bruce M. Graham, and Ray J. Graham; and sisters-in-law, Pat Graham and Dorothy Graham.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church, followed by a reception for friends and family at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations to Bridgewater Retirement Fund, 302 N. 2nd St., Bridgewater, VA 22812.
