Robert Garvin Burns

"If I die now, I want everyone to know I've had a great life."

"PawPaw"

"Mr. Bob"

Bob Burns passed away quietly on the morning of Thursday, September 8, 2011 after a lengthy illness. He had been valiantly battling both heart disease and lung disease for many years and only became bedridden a few days ago. In addition to the hospice nurses, he was lovingly cared for by his family and died at home as he wished. His was cremated so that his ashes could be buried in the pasture in front of his house. A memrial marker will be placed at Mt. Zion Baptist Cemetery.

He was born in Columbus on January 1, 1924, the son of Rufus Garvin Burns (1881-1935) and Jessie Goodman Burns (1905-1930). He also had a baby brother, Charles, who died in infancy in 1930, and a sister, Elizabeth Burns Brown, who died in 2009 in Gulfport, Mississippi. His brothers from his father's first wife were: John Louis, Benjamin Hobson, Major Boyd and Stancel Gainey Burns; his sisters were Ila Mae Burns McNeese, Irene Burns Robertson, Van Lee Burns Wood, and Inez Burns Neal. All were very special to him and all predeceased him. He often held reunions and barbeques to keep the families close. He also leaves many nephews and nieces who considered Uncle Bob the best and who loved and admired him greatly.

In 1946, he married Juanita Valdez of Gulfport, Mississippi. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. She was by his side when he died. Besides his wife, he leaves their five children: Carolyn Burns Kaye (Sam); Anna Burns Peters (Gary); Jimmy Burns (Ladonna); Susie Burns Lindsey (John); and Jane Burns Jordan (Bo). His grandchildren: Ryan Neault (Diana), Jessica Neault Hartman, Susanna Santos Oglesby (David), Jeremy Burns, Robert Santos, Justin Lindsey, Mikey Lindsey (Stephanie), Becky Glasgow Hutcheson (Jess), Jim Burns, and Joesy Burns. Great grandchildren: Gilly Hartman, Madeline Hartman, Amber Neault, Cade Hartman, Thomas Oglesby, Isabella Santos, and twins, Taylor and Skyler Lindsey.

Bob Burns was a true family man and included them in everything... from Sunday drives in the car to travels all over the U.S. and down into Mexico and Guatemala in his motor homes. He especially loved Christmas when he had all the family (up to four generations) at home together. Papaw's greatest joy was watching the little ones open the many presents under the tree.

He was a well-known and respected citizen of Lowndes County all of his life, leaving Columbus only for military service in the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (Seabees) during WWII. He often wore a cap with the Seabee emblem on it.

He was first a farmer - he loved his land and his livestock. In 1957, he went to work at the Columbus Air Force Base in Civil Engineering and retired from there in 1987. Once again, he returned to his favorite profession, farming and raising cows, which he continued doing until just a few months ago. If he could have had his way, he would have died on his tractor.

In 1952, he became a member of the Columbus Fair & Livestock Association and was President and General Manager since 1984. He worked hard to keep the annual Columbus Fair going and this one next week will be the first one he has missed in almost sixty years.

During his illness, he was often heard to say, "If I die now, I want everyone to know I've had a great life." Because of him, his family has had one too. His greatest legacy was love.
