Christopher Yates was designated by Governor Ford of Illinois to arrest Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, and put them in jail in Carthage. Two days after his incarceration, Joseph Smith was shot in his jail cell by angry militia men. Joseph Smith fell from the second floor to the ground.
