Christopher Yates was designated by Governor Ford of Illinois to arrest Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, and put them in jail in Carthage. Two days after his incarceration, Joseph Smith was shot in his jail cell by angry militia men. Joseph Smith fell from the second floor to the ground. As he lay there, still breathing, the militia finished him off with their guns.
Christopher Yates had preferred to remain neutral on the issue of the Mormons, which is why Governor Ford chose him to arrest him. As far as we know, Christopher Yates didn't partake in the brutal murder of Joseph Smith and his brother.
Later, Joseph Smith III, son of Joseph Smith, was befriended by both Christoper Yates and his son Putnam Yates. It was Putnan Yates who suggested to Joseph Smith that he move to Utah.
