Message rec'd:
"The steamship George W. Elder was built for the Old Dominion Steamship Company in 1874. Old Dominion was a shipping line that was owned by Nathaniel L'Hommedieu McCready. McCready's wife was Caroline Amanda Waldron, whose sister Matilda was married to George W. Elder. George Elder was a successful wholesale grocer merchant and partner with his father of George Elder & Sons. He became Vice President of his brother-in-law's Old Dominion Steamship Company later in his life. George died unexpectedly in 1873 at the age of 43 and McCready named this ship after him just after he died. The ship was sold and made its way to the Northwest Pacific coast and was leased and lavishly refitted for a famous naturalists' exploration of coastal Alaska sponsored by Edward Harriman in 1899.

George Elder did not own the Domino building. The Elder who was a partner in the sugar refining company Havemeyers & Elder was Joseph Lawrence Elder, George's younger brother. Lawrence, as he was called, was married to Mary Osborne Havemeyer, daughter of Frederick C. Havemeyer, who was the Havemeyer partner along with his sons, George, Theodore, Thomas and Henry Osborne Havemeyer.

There were many marriages between the Havemeyer and Elder families and they lived near each other on West 14th Street in the 1840s-1860s. George and Matilda's daughter, Louisine Elder, married Henry Osborne Havemeyer, who transformed the Havemeyers & Elder Refining Company into the Sugar Trust in the 1890s. H. O. and Louisine were voracious collectors of art and were the first to bring Impressionist art to America. Their collection is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art."
