Born in Blue Diamond, Kentucky, the daughter of Oscar and June (Davidson) Combs, Phyllis moved with her parents who were looking for a better life than the coalfields of eastern Kentucky had to offer. After a short stint in the shipyards of Jacksonville, Florida, they moved to Cincinnati where Phyllis attended her first six years of school. In 1959, she moved back to Florida with her mother and younger brother. Here is where she would marry and start her family, but after a divorce she went to work for her father and would relocate to Kentucky. Later she would remarry and move to Ohio where she lived and worked the rest of her life with her husband, Walter.

Unfortunately, she contracted Rheumatic fever as a toddler. Apparently, the fever affected her heart causing a defect in a valve. At the age of 30, shortly after going to work for her father's company, she had her first heart valve replacement. Over the course of the ensuing 20+ years she worked her way through the management ranks and successfully managed the finances during the restructuring of her father's company. During this time she had two more heart valve replacements, the third time receiving an artificial valve. Within about a year and a half that valve failed and we lost Phyllis at too early of an age.

She is survived by her husband of 22 years, Walter L. Murray; her son, Bud A. Thomas; and brothers, Douglas O. Combs, Michael A. Combs, Curtis T. Combs; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by both of her parents and is buried in the family cemetery in the area known as Grapevine, in northern Perry County Kentucky.

God looked around His garden
and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth
and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
and whispered "Peace be thine".
It broke our hearts to lose you
but you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you
the day God called you home.
