Mildred was the second child born to Wiley and Grace (Henderson) Martin. She was born and raised in Opp, Alabama. Mildred married first to E.J. Harrelson in 1942 or 1943. Mildred and E.J. had two children together. The couple divorced in 1956, although they had been separated for several years. By the time she legally divorced E.J., Mildred had had a third child by June McCart. Mildred married her second husband, Homer Means, on 5 January 1957 in Columbus, Georgia.
