Lawrence H. “Larry” ACHORN passed away at his home in Berthoud, Colorado, on June 29, 2008. He was 75.
Larry was born January 9, 1933, in Washburn, Maine, to Lawrence H. Achorn Sr. and Blanche L. Sands Achorn. Larry spent his youth in Maine, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. He served in the United States Air Force at Barrow, Alaska, and Waverly, Iowa, during the Korean War.
Larry received his bachelor of arts in English from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1958, and served as editor of the literary publication, The Wartburg Castle. He studied French at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, and received a master of arts in reading education from the University of Minnesota in 1967.
Larry met and married Sigrid Ronda Simonson in Iowa in 1959. They soon moved to the Twin Cities in Minnesota, where they had two children, Gretchen and Lawrence, and taught in the public school systems for the next eleven years. Larry and his family lived in Iowa in 1971, moved to Longmont, Colorado, the following year, and built their home in Berthoud in 1974.
Larry was an educator in the St.Vrain Valley School District from 1972 to 1992, where he taught remedial reading, English, and the fourth grade.
Larry pursued his many hobbies in retirement. An accomplished horseman, Larry was a member of the Morgan Horse Association and the North American Trail Riding Conference. Larry was an avid reader and also enjoyed woodworking, rock collecting, and genealogy.
Larry was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Longmont. He also was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Barons of the Magna Charta.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Sigrid, who died in 2004, his parents, a brother, and a sister. He is survived by his sisters, Gwynne McDougall Lawrence of Providence, Rhode Island, Jackie Kizer of Julesburg, Colorado, and Harriet Glenzel of Winchendon, Massachusetts; his daughter, Gretchen Nightingale of Rapid City, South Dakota; his son, Lawrence Simonson Achorn of Oakland, California; his granddaughter, Sheila Nightingale of New York City, New York; and his grandsons, Jackson Lawrence Achorn and Calvin Thomas Achorn of Oakland, California.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2008, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steve Berke officiating. Cremation will be held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund for the maintenance of the handbells and sent in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry St., Longmont 80501.
