Inscription

son of Capt Barzillai Luce
of Tisbury
Martha's Vineyard
===================
(The below was written on his deathbed and placed on his tombstone at his request. The epitaph had been an object of curiosity for years, and the stone sought out and read by thousands!)

Tread, gentle reader, near the dust
Committed to this tomb-stones trust;
For while 'twas flesh is held a guest
With universal love possessed;
A soul that stemmed opinion's tide,
Did over soots in triumph ride-
Yet separate from the giddy crowd
And paths tradition has allowed,
Through good and ill report he passed,
Oft censured, yet approved at last.
Woulds't thou his religion know?
In brief terms this: To all to do
Just as he would be done unto.
So in kind Nature's laws he stood,
A temple undefiled with blood;
A friend to everything 'twas good.
The rest, angels above can fitly tell;
Haste, then, to them and him, - and so farewell.
His parents said "Wilmot Luce" should be his name.
Since then his petition did improve the same;
And, after, his name was Wilmot D'Luce.
Old acquaintance, judge ye, was he wise, or
foolish as a goose?

Many Thanks to Deb, JWILSON for the added info above
