Florence was the daughter of Edna Johnson Hennesy and Artie Hennesy. She was born in Okemah, Oklahoma. Her parents married young and divorced young. Florence grew up in close association with her cousins Sylven, Audrey, Bonnie, and her aunt Marie and her brother Leslie. She was a tomboy as a little girl and in her 60's when she lived in Modesto, California she would reminisce and tell me stories of her childhood in Oklahoma of how she would catch opossums by their tails and because they were so poor she would prepare those opossums for her mom to cook. However, as an adult she was refined . She worked in several fields and at the same time she taught piano lessons in her home. She married Troy Virgil "Doc" Carter in Oklahoma before 1935. They had 3 daughters: Audrey Yvonne Carter, Sarah E Carter, and Shirley Carter. On June 6th 1968, my parents and I arrived at her house in Modesto, CA from a long vacation drive from Oklahoma. That night Florence and my parents and I watched Robert Kennedy give his speech from the Los Angeles Hotel on TV and Florence was so impressed with him. Then the speech was over and a few seconds later we heard that he was shot and we were all filled with dread. The next day, Florence drove us in her station wagon through San Francisco on our way to the Golden Gate Park Zoo and the city seemed like a ghost town. Bobby Kennedy had been scheduled to speak there that evening. His political banners blew in the breeze on many buildings along the empty streets. We were on vacation but we felt a great sense of sadness and loss. Florence still showed us a wonderful time in California that week. Before we left her home, she gave me an antique mortar and pestal made of stone which I kept for many years.
