Michael Harmon's second marriage was to Catherine Rudisill Rhyne. The name of his first wife is unknown. The earliest group of Harmon's in this country belonged to the group known as the "Pennsylvania Dutch" which are of German descent. Michael was born about 1 year after the signing of the Declaration of Independence & he died about 3 years before the beginning of the Civil War. The 1850 census shows that he was born in Pennsylvania. It is not known in what year he came to North Carolina, but it is believed that he was a part of the Westward & Southward movement of the Pennsylvania Dutch in the late Seventeen and early Eighteen Hundreds.
In 1850 the census showed that Michael Harmon owned 1000 acres of land. His homeplace was located at what is known as the M.L. Pharr place. His property covered the territory beginning near Friendship Church and reaching to & beyond Route 115 Highway. Michael Harmon showed a deep interest in his community. He donated lumber & labor toward the building of Friendship Church. He built the Harmon school about a half mile East of his home near a spring. This is what was later known as the Frank Snow place.
