Robert Oliver Hood was called "Oliver." He married Alice Viola Moody about 1914. They had two children, James Carroll and Mary Ida, before divorcing about 1920. He then married Mandy Easter I. Nappier. They had eight children: Elva Mae, Lillian Leuna, Elson Boyd, Oliver Julian, Billy Ray. Marlon Vinyard, Naomi Ruth, and Hilda Jean.

Oliver was a gifted country musician and song writer. He taught music and hosted a country music program on WLAG in LaGrange, Georgia. He wrote the song, "You Are My Sunshine" as early as 1933. Notably, George Jones, country music artist, once called "You Are My Sunshine" the most perfect song ever written and widely considered to be the third best-known song in the world after "Happy Birthday" and "White Christmas."
Sadly, Oliver did not copyright his work until after "You Are My Sunhine" had been copyrighted and published with "words and music by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell" with the Southern Music Publishing Company of New York on January 30, 1940. The song was well known in the country music world around western Georgia years before the 1940 release. Georgia State University professor Wayne Daniel, long a researcher of the history of American country music, concluded in a 1984 article that the origin of the song would never be ascertained and repeated so in "Pickin' on Peachtree: A history of Country Music in Atlanta, Georgia" (University of Illinois Press, 1990): "So like some of the words ascribed to Shakespeare, the authorship of 'You Are My Sunshine' will probably never be decided to everyone's satisfaction."
