Carroll Ray Jordan passed away on Sunday, December 4, at the age of 73. He was born to Ervin Max Jordan and Mabel Sophia Charlotte (Ericson) Jordan on October 5, 1938 in Woodsboro, Texas in a small town hospital where he was noted to sound like a "bull" midst a group of girl babies.
Ervin was a Methodist Minister and Ray attended elementary schools first in the small Texas towns of Schulenberg, Charlotte, Yancey, Melvin, and Mason. He attended high school in Mason and San Angelo and graduated from San Angelo High School in the spring of 1956. He was a member of the Puncher band and Future Farmers of America. He attended San Angelo Jr. College, the University of Texas in Austin, and graduated from the University of Texas in El Paso with a BS in 1964.
Ray joined the Texas National Guard in 1957 and served in both the 49th Armored Division and the 36th Infantry Division. Upon graduation in 1964, he joined the Department of Army at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, working as a civilian at various times as Mathematician, Missile Scientist, Missile Engineer, Project Engineer, Electronic Engineer Branch Chief and Division Chief. Ray was associated with various Army projects including the Redeye Air Defense Missile System, the Lance Artillery Missile System, Littlejohn Artillery Rocket, the Honest John Artillery rocket, various artillery warheads and submunition delivery systems, simulated nuclear weapons, simulated chemical and biological delivery systems, air defense targets, helicopter, jet, and prop drones. He also worked on a mine detonation program which involved flying with one foot hanging out of an Army UH-1 helicopter from White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico to Yuma, Arizona.
In January 1973, Ray found the love of his life at White Sands Missile Range, Carolina. They were wed in 1975 in Las Cruces, New Mexico and lived in El Paso, Texas with Carol's daughter Yvonne Marie, who he adopted. In 1978, Ray and Carol adopted Ruben Lee who was 3 years old.
In 1979, Ray was transferred to Ft. Greely, Alaska where he was employed by the Cold Regions Test Center. While at Cold Regions Test Center, Ray was a Branch Chief and later a Division Chief where he was involved with the instrumentation and testing of such Army Material as, M-2 Tank, mines, fuel handling equipment, the Apache helicopter, water purification sets, sleeping bags, and boots. While at Ft. Greely, Ray experienced a stuck throttle due to carbon icing, getting trapped in the middle of a forest fire, -80 degrees F temperature, and having a picnic on a frozen lake at -30 degrees where one end of the wieners froze while on the grille. We helped build a log church in Delta Junction, Alaska.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a great-grandson, Gabriel. He is survived by his wife Carolina (Carol), of Mason, daughter, Yvonne Alba and husband Abel of Mason, son, Ruben Jordan and wife Laura of Corpus Christi, a brother E. Wayne Jordan and wife Kathy of Art, nine grandchildren, Willy Alba and wife Mayra of Bastrop, Joseph Alba and wife Tina of Pooler, Georgia, Michael Jordan, Timothy Jordan, Eric Jordan, Isaiah Jordan, Brandon Jordan, Brittany Jordan, and Samantha Jordan, six great grandchildren, Achilles Alba, Joseph James Alba, Kaymie Alba, Kristain Alba, Karinah Vasquez, and Ethan Vasquez, nephew Josh Calhoun and wife Lorien and their children Jackson, Caleigh, and Lincoln.
Funeral services for Mr. Jordan will be held on Wednesday, December 7, at 4:00 p.m. Burial will follow at the Art West Cemetery.
